We have recently participated to the kick-off meeting of the recently granted project CALIBRA (CAscading LIgnin BioRefinery Approach). The two years project runs under “Biorizon - The way to aromatics” (http://www.biorizon.eu/). The CALIBRA project partners are OLAM, RUG, ECN, ENERPY, SPPREMA, GOOD FUELS, and MTSA.  FeyeCon role is to address the downstream fractions resulted from thermochemical treatment (of the lignin based bio materials) and to recover, via scCO2 extraction, the phenolic fractions. The thermochemical treatment (pyrolysis and/or photonic radiolysis) will be applied to different lignin rich bio waste (like wood chips, bark and various nutshells) which is available currently in The Netherlands. FeyeCon will focus on process development and pilot design of the scCO2 extraction of the phenolic fraction.

We are proud and excited for this new great challenge to make use of our green and adaptable ScCO2 knowledge.

WASTE TREATMENT AND VALORIZATION

More and more companies are committed to adopting cradle to cradle production cycles and recycling. FeyeCon upcycles CO₂ waste gas from other industries to make production processes more sustainable. Because we believe that recycling and waste management is of vital importance we are involved in several projects to recycle waste and upgrade byproducts. 

TREATING WASTE WATER 

Algae are able to grow in municipal and industrial wastewater and break down organic waste. Under certain circumstances and when the algae are ‘trained’ to do so, they can even absorb and concentrate chemical waste. FeyeCon researches how to optimize the cultivation and harvesting of micro-algae in wastewater. 

UPGRADED FOOD RESIDUES

FeyeCon develops new approaches to upgrade the quality of food waste and by-products that currently serve as feed or biofuel. By improving the quality aspects of these by-products they can be made fit for human consumption, achieving a higher market value. An example of upgrading food residues is the extraction of proteins out of rape seeds. Additionally, rape seed contains indigestible fibers and anti-nutrients. FeyeCon is able to separate the valuable proteins from the other components, thereby significantly upgrading the rape seed oil. Another example is the extraction of valuable anti-oxidants from olive leaves, which are now considered invaluable waste. 

VALUE FROM WASTE FLOWERS

Many by-products  generated in horticulture are considered to be waste, but contain valuable and natural ingredients. All these ingredients are currently left unused, while they could easily replace their synthetic equivalents. For example, FeyeCon is able to extract Galantamine out of narcissus bulbs, a constituent currently used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Color can also be extracted from flower by-product. These can be used in cosmetics, but also to enhance the color of other flowers.
