Using CO₂ for a clean paper industry

In 2011 CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industry) collectively concluded that the European paper industry needs to change its course and head for the future (2050 Roadmap). In order to develop sustainable changes throughout  the entire pulp & paper chain, the Two Team Project (TTP) was initiated. The project aims to kick-start open innovation on sector level investigating new game-changing technologies. Focussing on the way the paper industry operates and targeting costs reduction, adding value, lower energy consumption and ambitious decrease of carbon emissions.

FeyeCon contributes to CEPI’s Two Team Project with know-how and clean technology

With our concepts pulp and paper is proposed to be dried without the need for heat or steam – reducing energy and water consumption. More importantly, contaminants like waxes, adhesives and mineral oils can be removed, which is considered one of the key issues these days. FeyeCon’s concepts also propose the separation of pulp into different fibre grades. Enabling purchasers to buy only the exact type of fibre they need (fibre on demand), including recycled fibre which is free from contaminants. This opens up possibilities for greater production from the available fibre in Europe.

As mentioned in TTP’s final report,  “if applied throughout the sector by 2050, FeyeCon’s CO₂ technology has the potential to reduce fossil CO₂ emissions by 45% compared to the 2011 baseline and result in around 20% primary energy savings within the current mill boundaries”. This is due to the fact that existing ‘waste’-CO₂ is used. We put its unique properties to use in a closed loop system, thereby recycling and re-using it, not producing it.  

Now that the Two Team Project has come to an end and the breakthrough technologies for the 2050 world have been determined, the European Union and the paper industry need to cooperate and enable research, pilot demonstration and investments. FeyeCon is very happy to stand at the beginning of these positive and ground breaking changes in the paper industry.

The use of chemicals in the textile industry and the pressure it puts on our fresh water reserves pose significant problems. FeyeCon has solved these problems with its game changing CO₂ technology. Our processes not only uses less or no chemicals or water, they also consume less energy and are faster, which dramatically reduces production costs. 

WATER FREE DYEING & PROCESSING

Our most revolutionary achievement is our waterless textile dyeing process. Skeptics said it could not be done, but we have proven the contrary. With the help of launching partner Nike, our joint venture DyeCoo has successfully implemented the first water free dyeing process for polyester, steadily making the dyeing business a clean business. We are currently investigating water free processes for cotton, leather and other fibers like paper.

WASTE TREATMENT AND VALORIZATION

More and more companies are committed to adopting cradle to cradle production cycles and recycling. FeyeCon upcycles CO₂ waste gas from other industries to make production processes more sustainable. Because we believe that recycling and waste management is of vital importance we are involved in several projects to recycle waste and upgrade byproducts. 

TREATING WASTE WATER 

Algae are able to grow in municipal and industrial wastewater and break down organic waste. Under certain circumstances and when the algae are ‘trained’ to do so, they can even absorb and concentrate chemical waste. FeyeCon researches how to optimize the cultivation and harvesting of micro-algae in wastewater. 

UPGRADED FOOD RESIDUES

FeyeCon develops new approaches to upgrade the quality of food waste and by-products that currently serve as feed or biofuel. By improving the quality aspects of these by-products they can be made fit for human consumption, achieving a higher market value. An example of upgrading food residues is the extraction of proteins out of rape seeds. Additionally, rape seed contains indigestible fibers and anti-nutrients. FeyeCon is able to separate the valuable proteins from the other components, thereby significantly upgrading the rape seed oil. Another example is the extraction of valuable anti-oxidants from olive leaves, which are now considered invaluable waste.

Many by-products  generated in horticulture are considered to be waste, but contain valuable and natural ingredients. All these ingredients are currently left unused, while they could easily replace their synthetic equivalents. For example, FeyeCon is able to extract Galantamine out of narcissus bulbs, a constituent currently used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Color can also be extracted from flower by-product. These can be used in cosmetics, but also to enhance the color of other flowers.

Our Joint Venture DyeCoo has truly revolutionized the textile dyeing industry. They provide equipment and processes for water-free textile dyeing. The method uses no water at all, substantially less chemicals and has considerably lower operational costs than conventional dyeing processes. Considering it takes approximately 100 litres of water to dye one kilo of textile, the positive impact DyeCoo has on the dyeing industry and our environment is colossal.
