COFERT is a research and development project co-funded by Eco-innovation Initiative of the European Union. The project aims to implement algae based process which is able to capture, sequester and recycle CO2 from biogas plants (including those installed in Wastewater Treatment plants). The project aims to scale-up microalgae-based cultivation process, to reduce energy consumption of micro-algae harvesting process, and to produce slow-release bio-fertilizer from the micro-algae biomass.

Micro-algae contain growth hormones which promote various plants growth, allow improved seed germination, root development, earlier flowering, and uniform fruit development. For us it is crystal clear - algae are the future. With algae we can feed and cure more people (and animals) than by any other means. This is not news, however, the bottleneck to achieve such goals has always been to process algae cost efficiently. We are working on it! Our goal is to make algae processing cost effectively. We employ a combination of extraction and fractionation techniques that are non-toxic, faster and yield high quality compounds from algae. 

FISH FRIENDLY OMEGA-3 AND OMEGA-6

We have the know-how to extract algae based compounds like polyunsaturated fatty acids, e.g. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, antioxidants, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals which are essential for human health. By producing pharmaceutical or food grade fatty acids from microalgae, the traditional source - fish stock - is not threatened or depleted.

WASTE TREATMENT AND VALORIZATION

More and more companies are committed to adopting cradle to cradle production cycles and recycling. FeyeCon upcycles CO₂ waste gas from other industries to make production processes more sustainable. Because we believe that recycling and waste management is of vital importance we are involved in several projects to recycle waste and upgrade byproducts. 

TREATING WASTE WATER 

Algae are able to grow in municipal and industrial wastewater and break down organic waste. Under certain circumstances and when the algae are ‘trained’ to do so, they can even absorb and concentrate chemical waste. FeyeCon researches how to optimize the cultivation and harvesting of micro-algae in wastewater. 

UPGRADED FOOD RESIDUES

FeyeCon develops new approaches to upgrade the quality of food waste and by-products that currently serve as feed or biofuel. By improving the quality aspects of these by-products they can be made fit for human consumption, achieving a higher market value. An example of upgrading food residues is the extraction of proteins out of rape seeds. Additionally, rape seed contains indigestible fibers and anti-nutrients. FeyeCon is able to separate the valuable proteins from the other components, thereby significantly upgrading the rape seed oil. Another example is the extraction of valuable anti-oxidants from olive leaves, which are now considered invaluable waste. 

VALUE FROM WASTE FLOWERS

Many by-products  generated in horticulture are considered to be waste, but contain valuable and natural ingredients. All these ingredients are currently left unused, while they could easily replace their synthetic equivalents. For example, FeyeCon is able to extract Galantamine out of narcissus bulbs, a constituent currently used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Color can also be extracted from flower by-product. These can be used in cosmetics, but also to enhance the color of other flowers.
