Formulation issues might hamper the therapeutic possibilities of API’s and their commercial success. Several traditional approaches have been developed to create nano-particles, with different degrees of success. Using carbon dioxide as an alternative for organic solvents provides for a greener processing, while the technique allows for mild processes for micronisation and microencapsulation. Managing the particle production process, will also allow for morphology control.
Release profiles of any compound can be tailored through control of particle size and morphology, which has an effect on solubility. Mild processes for micronisation and microencapsulation allow for an easy, yet effective formulation of particles.

In order to create more stability and extend the shelf life of your formulation, a number of possibilities are offered, such as CO2 mild drying or gentle microencapsulation techniques. Mild drying techniques result in successful stabilization of sensitive APIs with the retention of structural integrity and bioavailability. Gentle micro-encapsulation via supercritical CO2 processing is particularly advantageous for materials that are sensitive to temperature, oxidation and light.
